Meet Chris

Chris Afendoulis is the State Representative from the 73rd House District. Chris is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and has used his financial expertise to further the goal of improved fiscal discipline and accountability to Michigan's Taxpayers It's their hard-earned money...and Chris will always remember that. 

As State Representative and as a local elected official, he balanced budgets and understands what government should do on a day-to-day basis: deliver efficient and effective services at the lowest cost to the taxpayers. It's these common sense conservative principles that guide him in his work in Lansing.

Personal and Education

  • Chris was raised in Grand Rapids Township and has lived his entire life in the 29th District
  • Attended Forest Hills Public Schools, graduating from Forest Hills Northern High School in 1980
  • Received his Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business in 1984, majoring in accounting
  • Chris and his wife Phyllis have three daughters: one in college and two who attend the Forest Hills Public Schools

Professional

  • Certified Public Accountant and a Certified Global Management Accountant
  • PriceWaterhouseCoopers CPAs -  Chris audited governmental agencies, cities, banks as well as insurance, manufacturing and sales firms
  • Financial executive in private industry for 24 years with an automotive parts supplier. Chris worked in various financial positions, including Vice President of Finance from 2000 through May of 2013
  • Chris is a co-owner of Afendoulis Cleaners and Tuxedos, a family business begun by his father Sam Afendoulis and uncles George and Gus in 1947. The business has been headquartered at the corner of Michigan and Fuller ever since. In total, Afendoulis Cleaners and Tuxedos operates three locations throughout Kent County.
  • Member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and the Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants (MACPA)

Public Service

  • Chris was elected to the Michigan House of Representatives in 2014, serving the citizens of the 73rd district.
  • He has served the citizens of Grand Rapids Township as Treasurer since 2007 and was re-elected in 2008 and 2012.
  • Elected as a Township Trustee in 2004, in his first run for public office, and served until being appointed Township Treasurer.
  • Chris was appointed to a three-year term on the John Ball Zoo Advisory Board by the Kent County Commission in January of 2003.

In the years that Chris served on the Grand Rapids Township Board, the Township:

  • Operated under a balanced budget every year, while providing quality services and maintaining the integrity of the Township's assets
  • Maintained its property tax millage rate at 1.5995 mils, one of the lowest in Kent County
  • Added 85 acres of land to Crahan Valley Park and constructed over three miles of recreational trails, all accomplished without increasing taxes 
  • Worked to establish endowment funds to provide for the sustainability of Township assets including local roads, recreational trails and parks, buildings and grounds and equipment
  • Simplified zoning and regulatory ordinances

Civic, Charitable and Religious Activities

The Afendoulis family has been very active in the Greater Grand Rapids community, supporting many organizations and activities.

Chris served on the Forest Hills Schools Fine Arts Center Foundation Board, which raised more than $1.3 million toward an endowment fund to operate the Fine Arts Center.

He is a proud member of the University of Michigan Alumni Association and served on the Board of the University of Michigan Club of Grand Rapids during the 1990's. 

A lifelong member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Grand Rapids, he has served two separate terms on its parish council and was president of the council from 2001 through 2004. As a committed Orthodox Christian, his Church plays a central role in the life of his family. 

Chris has also been active in Republican Party politics since 1980 volunteering and serving in various capacities.

Chris and his family have been contributors of both time and treasure to organizations which address health related issues, arts organizations, numerous Christian and relief charities and educational opportunities for children.
